The initiative "Azione Mulligan", promoted by Conservatorio di Musica "Luca Marenzio" in Brescia under the scientific direction of Luca Bragalini and within the IartNET project, celebrates the genius of the great American saxophonist through international academic research and education. The project has its core in the masterclass and international conference featuring musicologist and double bassist Alyn Shipton, author of the reference book published by Oxford University Press dedicated to Mulligan's 1950s quartets. During the sessions in the Salone Pietro Da Cemmo, Shipton guides students through a theoretical and practical journey focused on the performance dynamics of Mulligan's famous "pianoless" quartet, combining the historical study of jazz with the concert activity of the Conservatory's Big Band and jazz soloists.
