About The Work
The bas-relief depicts a marble icon of the Madonna and Child, executed by an anonymous sculptor in 1532. The image is a copy of the relief Madonna and Child by the Florentine sculptor Benedetto da Maiano (1547), now preserved in the National Gallery of Art, Washington. The design and modelling are schematic and synthetic, yet the close adherence to the original composition makes it possible to recognise both its elements and its source, particularly in the cherubs’ faces in the background and in the poses of the Virgin and Child. The lower surface is smoothed and bears the inscription:
“LA PASSIONE DI DIO/ SI E A DI IIDI MARZO 30/ QUANDO FU CHRUCIFISSO IN SUL LENGNO DELA/ CROCE AL SEPULCHRO/ 1532.”
