About The Work
Work by the sculptor Pietro Lazzerini (Carrara 1837 – 1917). The son of the sculptor Tommaso, he learned the art of sculpture under Aristodemo Costoli and continued his activity in the large family workshop, where he produced numerous marble works sent to Italy and abroad. In 1872 he took part in the Vienna World Exhibition with the marble works “Adolescenza” and “Amore fraterno.” In 1878 he was appointed full professor of sculpture at the Accademia di Carrara. In 1889 he sent several works to the Paris World Exhibition. Lazzoni C., noting the work in the "Prima Stanza dei Saggi” at the Palazzo del Principe, describes it as "Bacco in atto di addormentarsi", a model executed as the first study for the Roman scholarship in 1861. Among the studies preserved in the Carrara collection, it is one of the most successful works. The intoxication of the youthful Bacchus emerges from the entire posture of the body, as well as from the smallest details: the relaxation extends to the fingers, unable to hold the cup; the torso, released, traces a sinuous curve, rich in opposing symmetries; the left leg slips squarely beneath the right to prevent falling; finally, the face is composed with a delicate grace that nevertheless conveys the sense of unawareness produced by the fumes of wine. Stylistically, the work draws inspiration from the Neoclassical tradition, while interpreting it in a distinctly personal manner. With this piece Lazzerini also demonstrates extraordinary virtuosity. In the plaster cast gallery of the Accademia di Carrara there are: the plaster high relief “Evandro che si getta dolente sul corpo dell’estinto figlio Pallante” 1860, Pensionato in Firenze, prize-winning; and the sculptures in the round “Leda con Giove” 1862, second study carried out in Florence.
