About The Work
The work, noted by Lazzoni C. in the "Seconda Stanza dei Saggi” at the Palazzo del Principe, is the second pensioner’s study sent to Rome in 1829 by Leopoldo Bozzoni (Carrara 1801 – London? 1840). The artist attended the Accademia di Carrara, winning the scholarship in Rome in 1826, where he went to practice sculpture in the studio of his fellow townsman Carlo Finelli. He later moved to London, where he died prematurely. The model, in the inventory lists, is mistakenly recorded as “Aiace,” due to its strong resemblance to the model of this subject by Carlo Chelli. Regarding the figure depicted, Lazzoni recounts the episode in which he is involved, set in the region of Caria: the Athenian commander retreats before the flames set by Lysander during the campaign against Sparta. The strong affinity with Bozzoni’s other study, the “Marte,” confirms his adherence to Neoclassical prescriptions. The body of Alcibiades, through the pronounced forward shift of its center of gravity, recalls models by Antonio Canova such as the Hercules in the group “Ercole e Lica” and, in the defensive pose with the raised and bent arm, the Pugilatore Creugante. In the plaster cast gallery of the Accademia di Carrara there are: two plaster high reliefs, “Muzio dal’Ara” 1824, Concorso d’Invenzione gold medal, and “Abramo che lava i piedi ai tre angeli” 1826, Pensionato in Roma, prize-winning; and the plaster model depicting “Marte,” sent from Rome as the 1828 study.
