About The Work
There are no references to this work, except for Hubert’s mention of "deux danseuses", where it is evident that the author refers to this figure of a young dancer and to the other, also by Canova, known as "Danzatrice con le mani sui fianchi". These are models executed at half the scale of the original; the full-scale plaster casts are preserved at the Gipsoteca of Possagno. Carozzi cites it in his list of Canova works present at the Accademia. The original marble, currently at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Rome, was sculpted by Canova in 1810. Another plaster model, by Canova himself and preceding the translation into marble, is preserved at the Gipsoteca Canoviana of Possagno. The work bears on its surface the “repères”, classical metal points used to transfer measurements from the model to the marble block via pantograph; it is therefore plausible to assume that it was used to produce marble copies of the subject.
