About The Work
Lazzoni records the work in the "Galleria delle Opere Moderne" at the Palazzo del Principe, while Campori and Hubert, in mentioning Canova’s gift to the Accademia, do not clarify which of the two existing Pugilatori is concerned, whether "Creugante" or "Damosseno". Only the former appears in the inventories, which, however, do not indicate the circumstances under which the work arrived in Carrara. The plaster is a copy of the marble preserved in the Vatican Museums. In Possagno, at the Gipsoteca Canoviana, there is another plaster cast of this work. The Carrara model was presumably donated by the artist before 1814, since on 8 June of that year it was entered in the Inventario gen. mobili ed effetti Accademia B.A. Carrara. The work has long been used by students of the Accademia as a model for the execution of drawings, bas-reliefs, and copies in clay and plaster.
