About The Work
There is no documented information regarding this Carrara piece by Canova. Only Carozzi lists it among the plaster models certainly attributable to Canova. It is a partial reproduction of the statue of Pope Clement XIII, which dominates from above the pontiff’s funerary monument, executed by Canova and completed in 1791, when the installation in situ of the various allegorical sculptures composing it began. The ICCD record recalls the correspondence between the author and the Carrara native G. A. Bertè concerning the marbles required for this work. The provenance of this model, as well as the workshop and the name of the maker who produced it, remain unknown. The large bust was originally composed of three parts, of which only two survive today. Another copy of this work exists at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera.
