About The Work
The two plaster models are copies of the marble sculptures the "Vergine Annunziata" and the "Angelo annunziante", from the Cathedral of Carrara. The group, known as the “Cassanelle”, initially attributed to Nino Pisano, has more appropriately been reassigned to Franciscan-influenced artists and can be dated to the first half of the fourteenth century (Cataldi M., Annunciazione, scheda 98 a, b, in Niveo de marmore, exhibition catalogue, Genoa, 1992, pp. 305–306). The copies, made from the original marble works in 1953, were subsequently destroyed, in accordance with the directives of the Superintendence of Lucca.
