About The Work
The silver medal, intended for the Annual Encouragement Prizes at the Academies, features on the obverse the left profile of "Francesco V d’Austria-Este," Duke of Modena (1819–1875), with the full inscription of his titles and the artist’s signature "L. Cossa F." at the lower right.
On the reverse, three allegorical figures symbolize the principal arts: Sculpture, Architecture, and Painting. The circular inscription "LEVAN DI TERRA IN CIEL NOSTRO INTELLETTO" emphasizes the connection between art and human intellect, while at the center appears the artist’s signature: "LUIGI COSSA FECE."
