About The Work
The Dante commemorative medal, issued by the Municipality of Florence on the occasion of the sixth centenary of the birth of Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) in 1865, is presented here in a later restrike based on a nineteenth-century model, created by Arnoldo Fazzi.
On the obverse is depicted the left profile of the poet, with the circular inscription: "DANTE / ALIGHIERI." In the exergue appears the wording: "NAF. SERNESI ING. NETI . OFFICINA MARIOTTI," while beneath the bust is engraved the artist’s signature: "ARN. FAZZI MOD."
The reverse bears at the center the inscription: "AL DIVINO POETA / D'ITALIA / NEL MAGGIO MDCCCLXV / MUNICIPIO FIORENTINO," framed by two laurel branches tied with a ribbon.
