The medal commemorates participation in the Universal Exposition of Saint Louis.
Obverse: At the center, the allegorical figure of Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap, welcomes young America under her flag. The composition is framed by four converging triangular elements, separated by stylized fleurs-de-lis. Circular inscription: "UNIVERSAL . EXPOSITION . SAINT . LOUIS . UNITED . STATES . OF . AMERICA"; below, the year: "MCMIV."
Reverse: At the center, an eagle dominates a plaque, topped by a shell with two dolphins on either side. On the plaque: "SILVER . MEDAL / LOUISIANA . PURCHASE / EXPOSITION."
