About The Work
The medal, issued in 1893 by the Royal Academy of San Luca, commemorates the third centenary of the Academy’s foundation (1593–1893).
On the obverse is depicted the evangelist Luke in the act of writing, seated atop the winged ox, his iconographic attribute. The circular inscription reads: "REGIA . ACADEMIA . ARTIFICUM . A. DIVO . LUCA / MDCCCLXXXXIII."
The reverse bears a dedication to the painter and architect Federico Zuccari (ca. 1543–1609), refounder of the Academy in 1593. At the center is engraved:
"A . PRIMO / ACADEMICORUM . COETU / AD . SANCTAE . MARTINAE / DIE . XIV . NOVEMBR . MDXCIII / PRINCIPE . FRIDERICO . ZUCCARO / SAECULARIA . III / FELICITER."
