About The Work
The sculpture depicts a standing winged genius, wearing a light drapery at the level of the pubis and bearing attributes associated with hunting. The figure holds a javelin in his left hand and the lifeless body of a hare in his right, allegorical attributes that allude to the practice of hunting. This sculptural type is not isolated but finds parallels in nineteenth-century sculpture. The first version of the figure was modeled by Pietro Tenerani in 1824 and, together with the Genius of Fishing, was replicated in several versions. The marble example was donated to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara on 18 December 1929, in accordance with the testamentary wishes of his descendant Carlo Tenerani.
