About The Work
The commemorative medal for the Annual Encouragement Prizes at the Academies features on the obverse the left profile of Francesco IV d’Austria-Este, Duke of Modena (1799–1846), with the full inscription of his titles and the artist’s signature "I. Lang. F." at the lower right.
On the reverse, the allegorical figure of Minerva, protector of the Arts, offers a crown with her right hand, symbolizing recognition of artistic talent; the circular composition is completed by the inscription: "BONIS ARTIBUS."
