About The Work
The work depicts a winged genius, head bowed, intent on disentangling a fishing net. The figure, standing on a circular base, holds the net and an ovoid implement in his hands and along his right forearm. A basket is placed behind the left foot. These attributes are iconographic elements that clearly allude to fishing. The first version of the figure was modeled by Pietro Tenerani in 1824 and, together with the Genius of the Hunt (inv. no. 638), was replicated in several versions. The marble example was donated to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara on 18 December 1929, in accordance with the testamentary wishes of his descendant Carlo Tenerani.
