About The Work
The bas-relief is a reconstruction of a portion of the Edicola dei Fantiscritti; both are displayed in the Renaissance courtyard of Palazzo Cybo Malaspina, which has housed the Academy of Fine Arts Carrara since 1863. The Edicola dei Fantiscritti is an important Roman bas-relief dating to the third century AD and is one of the symbols of the city of Carrara. The relief depicts three Roman deities (Jupiter, Hercules, and Bacchus) and owes its name to the local dialect (“fanti” means “boys” and refers to the three carved figures, while “scritti” indicates the presence of inscriptions). It also serves as a document offering significant testimony to the notable figures who travelled to Carrara; among the most famous who left their signatures on the stele are Giambologna and Antonio Canova.
