About The Work
The high relief is the work of the sculptor Giuseppe Ferdinando Lazzerini (Carrara 1831 – 1895). The son of the sculptor Roberto, who died five months after his son’s birth, Lazzerini learned the art of sculpture together with his half-brother Alessandro, also a sculptor. The artist attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara, winning the scholarship in Rome in 1853. He subsequently went there to practise sculpture in the studio of his fellow townsman Pietro Tenerani. During those years, he submitted the works "S. Sebastiano" (1855) and "Agar e Ismaele" (1856). In 1858 he was appointed Honorary Member and in 1860 Full Professor of Sculpture; he served as Director of the Accademia di Carrara from 1892 until his death in 1895. At the centre of the work Achilles is depicted on a chariot, holding the reins of the horses in his right hand and steadying himself on the chariot with his left; moving toward the left, he drags the lifeless body of Hector, bound to the chariot. On the right, two Achaeans observe the scene; in the background a funerary stele emerges, from which hangs a large wreath. The work was awarded the silver medal in the Invention competition of 1852; the gold medal was assigned to Giuseppe Livi. In the plaster cast gallery (gipsoteca) of the Accademia di Carrara there are also preserved: the plaster high relief "Patroclo che uccide Serpedonte" (1853), scholarship work in Rome and prize-winning; the fully round models "Fanciulla con Ghirlanda" (1856) and "S. Sebastiano Martire" (1855).
