About The Work
Terracotta bust depicting Maria Teresa Cybo Malaspina d’Este (1725–1790), Duchess of Massa and Princess of Carrara, founder of the Ducal Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara in 1769. The portrait, executed from life in 1774, is the work of the sculptor Giovanni Antonio Cybei (1706–1784), the first director of the Academy’s “Scuola di scholtura e architettura” The model was later translated into marble on two occasions: the first version, by Pietro Stagi (1754–1814), dates to 1791, while a second, later version was executed in 1831 by Roberto Micheli Pellegrini. The portrait is of an official character, presenting the ruler in formal attire as a bust set on a plinth. The drapery and hairstyle are strongly modeled, framing the figure and lending it a sense of dignity and nobility.
