About The Work
The medal, issued to commemorate the return of artworks looted to France during the Napoleonic period, features on the obverse the right profile of Pius VII (Barnaba Gregorio Chiaramonti, 1740–1823), with the circular inscription: "PIUS SEPTIMUS / PONT. MAX. ANNO XVII."
On the reverse, a group of allegorical figures symbolizes the regions returned after Napoleon’s defeat, while at the bottom is the inscription: "BONONIA FERRARIA AEMILIA / PICENO BENEVENTO FREGELLIS / PONTIFICIAE POTESTATI / RESTITUTIS / A.D. MDCCCXV" and the artist’s signature: "BRANDT F."
