About The Work
The sculpture was created by Arturo Dazzi (1881–1966) in black Colonnata marble in the 1930s. The genesis of the work dates to 1927, when Dazzi modeled a first version in wax in his studio in Forte dei Marmi. This initial model was exhibited at the 16th Venice Biennale in 1928, where it received a favourable critical response. In the following years, the sculpture was first translated into red Verona marble, now lost, and displayed in the inner courtyard of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara around 1933, as documented by historical photographs. During the same period, the sculptor also produced a bronze version, exhibited at the National Exhibition of Animals in Art, held in Rome on 18 March 1930. The black marble version, now preserved in the Academy’s library, is documented from the 1940s onward. The sculpture was originally installed in Piazza Farini, but after sustaining significant damage in 1947 it was transferred to the premises of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara. The work is representative of sculptural production in Carrara during the 1930s, characterized by a formal language grounded in solid forms and a strong dialogue with light.
