About The Work
The high relief is the work of the sculptor Giuseppe Livi (Carrara 1828 – Buenos Aires ?). The artist attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara, winning the scholarship in Rome in 1852; in 1860 he was appointed Honorary Professor. At the centre of the work Achilles is depicted on a racing chariot drawn by two horses, turning toward the corpse of Hector, who is bound and dragged by the chariot; to the left two Achaeans observe the scene, while in the background, at the summit of a funerary stele, a trophy of arms is placed. No documentation relating to the work has been preserved; the only existing records state that it won the gold medal at the Invention competition of 1852, while the silver medal was awarded to Giuseppe Ferdinando Lazzerini. In the plaster cast gallery (gipsoteca) of the Accademia di Carrara no other works attributable to Giuseppe Livi are preserved; however, a marble portrait of Luigi Bienaimé is held there, which his father Vincenzo had sent to the Accademia di Carrara in 1858.
