About The Work
The image captures the then Director and President of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, in office since 2 February 1924, in the newly restored President's office. Adolfo Angeli played a fundamental role in the institution during the 1920s and 1930s (1924-1936), profoundly influencing its history and internal organisation. Under his direction, the Academy undertook a major restoration campaign of the building and renewed its teaching systems with a view to continuously improving the educational opportunities offered to students. The aim was to create a true ‘school of sculpture’ capable of providing careful and comprehensive artistic training for new artists and teaching them a real craft through the artisan working of marble. The practical training courses were complemented by the teaching of art history, costume history and anatomy, carried out by prominent figures who contributed to the prestige of the institution. Another objective of Angeli's management was the arrangement of the collections, with particular attention to the layout of the plaster casts and works of art. The ground floor of the building was redesigned and adapted as an ideal museum space to house numerous new works from the 20th century, both by students and established artists, such as works by Arturo Dazzi, Carlo Fontana and Arturo Tosi, reflecting a more modern and open vision of the Academy than in the past.
