About The Work
The image shows the loggia of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara after restoration work carried out between 1924 and 1934 under the direction of Adolfo Angeli. Originally, the loggia was the entrance to the main floor of the 16th-century building and was accessible via a staircase connecting the inner courtyard, located to the right of the loggia, to the entrance of the Presidency. During the renovation work, this staircase was removed. The 16th-century decorative elements remained hidden under a layer of lime until the early 20th century, when they were rediscovered and subsequently restored in 1934 on the occasion of the Marble Exhibition. The painter-restorer Giovanni Bassan intervened following the same interpretative logic applied to the architectural restoration of the entire building.
