About The Work
The photograph portrays the teaching staff of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara assembled in the newly restored Sala della Vittoria in 1931. Under the directorship of Adolfo Angeli (Fosdinovo, 1887 – Carrara, 1957), who assumed office on 2 February 1924, the Academy initiated a programme of institutional and pedagogical renewal. This reform aimed to provide young sculptors with a rigorous and comprehensive artistic education. Angeli’s objectives were twofold: first, to foster the production of works of high artistic quality; and second, to ensure the acquisition of solid technical expertise in marble carving, thereby offering students concrete professional preparation. Central to the realisation of this vision was the recruitment of trusted collaborators capable of sharing and advancing his educational programme. In 1929, the sculptor Arturo Dazzi—then a prominent figure on the Italian artistic scene—was appointed by the Ministry to the chair of figure sculpture, as evidenced by his presence in the group photograph. Angeli himself appears at the centre of the front row in his capacity as professor of art history. The faculty assembled under his direction comprised highly regarded and established professionals, entrusted with the responsibility of shaping the students’ artistic and technical formation. Their expertise contributed significantly to enhancing the prestige and reputation of the Institute.
