About The Work
The photograph documents a collection of sculptural exercises produced by students at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the foreground, a series of life-size male statues exemplify the academic style: nude figures with harmonious proportions, poses informed by classical statuary, subtle twists of the torso, and a careful rendering of anatomy. The works are displayed on pedestals draped with dark cloth, emphasising their verticality and isolating their forms within the spatial composition. Behind the statues, busts and reliefs—also executed as study exercises—are arranged in close succession, evoking the appearance of a small-scale indoor exhibition. The ensemble conveys the pedagogical environment of the Academy, in which copying from classical models and direct observation of the human figure were fundamental methods for artistic training. Among the reproductions of canonical works executed by the students, a copy of Michelangelo’s Dying Slave dated 1513 and conserved in the Louvre Paris.
