About The Work
The image documents the loggia of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara prior to the renovation campaign conducted between 1924 and 1934 under the direction of Adolfo Angeli. Originally conceived as the entrance to the piano nobile of the sixteenth-century building, the loggia was open on both sides and accessible by means of a staircase—subsequently demolished in the 1930s—that rose from the courtyard and connected to the right side of the loggia, opposite the present entrance to the Presidency. The windows were introduced only after the building was repurposed to house the Academy of Fine Arts. Moreover, the loggia’s original decorative elements, which had long remained concealed beneath a layer of limewash, were not uncovered and restored until 1934.
