About The Work

The image documents the exhibition of the end-of-year essays of the School of Ornamentation. A plaque positioned above the display bears the inscription that translates as: ‘CRAFTS SECTION – MALE DEPARTMENT – DAY COURSES – I, II, III YEAR ORNAMENTALISTS’. The architectural features of the room, particularly the staircase and handrail visible on the left, identify the space as one of the ground-floor rooms of the building, formerly serving as the antechamber to what is now the library. Today, the room houses a plaster cast of the Winged Victory of Samothrace (Nike), preserved by the Academy of Fine Arts. Between 1924 and 1934, under the direction of Adolfo Angeli, the building underwent extensive restoration, during which the ground-floor rooms were reconfigured to function as an ideal museum space.
