About The Work

The photograph documents the exhibition of student work organised by the School of Architecture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara in July 1930. On this occasion, all departments of the Academy, together with the local Art School, presented a comprehensive exhibition arranged by school, with the aim of illustrating pedagogical methods and showcasing student production to the public. In this instance, the School of Architecture structured its display around an extensive body of student exercises dedicated to the Collegiate Church of Sant’Andrea in Carrara. The materials on view included a range of graphic and documentary outputs. On the tables positioned at the rear right of the space, two façade elevations are displayed side by side: one constitutes a measured and faithful rendering of the building, while the other presents an interpretative re-elaboration based on ideal reconstruction. These works are complemented by axonometric projections of the interior, detailed relief drawings of capitals, and a substantial photographic campaign documenting the monument. The photographic materials highlight significant architectural features, including the trefoil arches of the lower register of the façade and the rose window. The image is particularly valuable as evidence of the pedagogical approach adopted at the Academy. The study of the monument emerges as grounded in rigorous metrological analysis and direct survey, supported by systematic photographic documentation. At the same time, the inclusion of interpretative additions suggests the integration of theoretical reflection and art-historical inquiry within the architectural curriculum.
