The photograph depicts an architectural survey exercise by Irmo Borutta, a student at the School of Architecture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, dating from the 1930s. The drawing presents a hypothetical reconstruction of the façade of the Collegiate Church of Sant’Andrea in Carrara, the city’s cathedral. At the time, the upper portion of the church’s façade remained incomplete, covered by a wooden structure that extended the gabled roof. The drawing constitutes a valuable historical and pedagogical source, as it provides insight into the methods of instruction and modes of learning employed in architectural education, while also revealing the interpretive approaches of professors and students toward medieval monuments. In this instance, the student reimagines the church façade according to an idealised and austere conception of medieval architecture, imparting a more rigorous structural articulation consistent with Gothic archetypes. Moreover, the façade is supplemented with imaginative elements, including sculptural representations of angels and saints functioning as acroteria, and a modification from a simple gabled form to a prominent salient façade. These creative interventions illuminate the interpretive framework adopted by the student, clarifying the principles guiding the execution of the architectural relief.
