About The Work
By definition, perspective refers to a method of representation that employs a 'point of view' (that is, the centre of projection) in order to construct three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional plane, thereby imitating human visual perception. Owing to this characteristic, perspective in the graphic disciplines renders objects situated at a greater distance as proportionally smaller than those perceived as nearer to the observer. Different types of perspective can be identified according to the placement and number of 'vanishing points'—that is, the points in space toward which receding straight lines converge relative to the chosen picture plane. In this respect, perspective may be considered closely related to the theory of shadows, particularly in relation to the principles governing illumination. A fundamental premise of this theory is that light, propagating in straight lines, produces on the surfaces and volumes it encounters shadows of varying kinds. These shadows, generated by the rectilinear propagation of light, may be classified as either 'cast' or 'attached' (self) shadows. Cast shadows are those projected by the physical mass of an object onto a surface—such as a floor or another adjacent solid body—whereas attached shadows belong intrinsically to the object itself, comprising those areas not reached by light and therefore remaining in shade. The complexity inherent in both perspective and the theory of shadows entails consideration of numerous variables, including the identification of one or more vanishing points, the position of one or more light sources, the inclination of planes, and the curvature of surfaces. All such elements may be systematically determined through the application of the relevant geometric principles appropriate to each specific case.
