About The Work
The image documents a display of drawing and sculptures produced by students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara. The central subject of the work, The Four Oxen, is surrounded by a series of drawings suspended on supports, forming part of an exhibition installed within the former Gallery of Modern Works, now the seat of the Academy Library. The room is identifiable by its distinctive architectural configuration, characterized by four paired columns with capitals and cross vaults. These elements have remained intact despite the extensive renovation campaigns undertaken at the Prince’s Palace between 1924 and 1934. The interventions carried out during this period—largely responsible for the building’s present appearance—reorganized the ground-floor spaces according to the principles of an ideal museum layout. Consequently, the historic hall associated with Alberico Cybo retained its nineteenth-century function as the Gallery of Modern Works, and the original entrance portal was reinstated during the restoration process. At present, the room houses the Academy Library and displays Arturo Dazzi’s sculpture Il Cavallino. The adjacent rooms contain the Altar of Illustrious Men, another work of particular institutional significance, as well as the Academy’s Ancient Collection.
