About The Work
The image depicts the Sala della Vittoria (Hall of Victory) of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara following the renovation campaign carried out under the direction of Adolfo Angeli between 1924 and 1934. Among the most significant interventions within the broader architectural reconfiguration of the complex was the creation of the new Sala della Vittoria, conceived as the monumental culmination of the grand staircase likewise dedicated to “Vittoria” (Victory), a concept aligned with one of the central values promoted by Fascist culture during the period. Architecturally, the hall is structured around a central entrance arch flanked by two arched openings containing balcony windows. These lateral spaces were intended to house two sculptures by Pietro Tenerani—La caccia (The Hunt) and La pesca (Fishing)—donated to the Academy by the artist’s son. In the image, a cast of the Nike of Samothrace (Winged Victory) is visible at the centre of the room. The cast is currently preserved on the ground floor of the Academy, in the area between the Library and the Ammannati Hall.
