The photograph reproduces the end-of-year project by the student Gustavo Baldacci, created during the 1897–1898 academic year at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, entitled Studio dal vero (Study from life). The work depicts a crucified Christ at the climax of his Passion and exemplifies the academic conventions of the late nineteenth century, which required students to demonstrate mastery of anatomy and composition through direct study from the model as a final examination. The figure is presented frontally, with arms extended along the horizontal beam of the cross and the torso slightly arched forward. The modelling reveals a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy: the pectorals, abdominals, and the tension in the arm muscles are rendered with naturalistic precision, avoiding dramatic exaggeration. The drapery, gathered around the hips, is treated with soft, carefully calibrated folds, providing a contrast to the exposed torso and contributing to the overall formal equilibrium of the composition. The expression, with the face tilted upwards, conveys a measured pathos—more contemplative than theatrical. This restraint reflects the didactic aims of the Academy, which remained committed to classical ideals of composure while simultaneously accommodating a nascent naturalistic sensibility characteristic of the late nineteenth century. Mounted on cardboard with a gold frame and annotated with handwritten notes, the photograph has significant documentary value: it not only attests to the technical skill attained by the student but also reflects the cultural and pedagogical climate of Carrara, where the study of the human figure and sacred subjects provided a central framework for the formation of sculptors.
