About The Work
The image captures the marble statue ‘Il Risveglio’ (The Awakening) by sculptor Rodolfo Castagnino (Genoa 1893 – Chiavari 1978). An artist working in the early 20th century, Castagnino characterised his work, mainly in bronze, wood, and terracotta, on the basis of a solid plastic matrix, enriched by a particular volumetric and anatomical study. The work in question won the National Sculpture Competition organised by the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara in 1931. As reported by the newspaper L’Avvenire d’Italia on 20 August 1931, «The jury did not award the actual prize of 20,000 lire, recognising the sculptor Castagnino from Chiavari instead as deserving of the 10,000 lire prize from the Derville Foundation, which was linked to the national competition, for his work entitled Il Risveglio (The Awakening). There were 22 works submitted to the competition. The exhibition of the works was visited by many people».
