About The Work
The Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro in Pavia was restored beginning in 1884 by the architect Angelo Savoldi, a pupil of Luca Beltrami, who had in turn studied under Camillo Boito. These two photographs are part of a photographic campaign carried out by Achille Ferrario before and after Savoldi’s interventions; they record the condition of the right nave prior to the restoration, which had collapsed in 1833. The church was reopened for worship in 1896.
