About The Work
In 1878, Baron Raimondo Franchetti purchased Palazzo Cavalli in Venice and entrusted its restoration to Camillo Boito, who designed and built the monumental staircase entirely anew. Its completion—encompassing both construction and the execution of the decorative programme—required more than five years of work. Giandomenico Romanelli has described the staircase of Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti as “an extraordinary, kaleidoscopic, brilliant tour de force,” a florilegium of materials and compositional variations on which Boito worked no longer merely as an artistic consultant for restorations, but as a designer in his own right. The photograph, most likely taken at the end of the building campaign, around 1886, documents the first flight of the staircase from the top to the bottom. On the walls, the allegorical bas-reliefs by Augusto Felici and by Emilio Marsili can be identified.
