Research Catalogue Workshop

An introduction to the versatile and most widely used online Platform for Artistic Research

Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan
Andreas Berchtold, In circles leading on – folkdance, a choreographic intersection, 2022, VIS - Nordic Journal for Artistic Research, 8

The Research Catalogue (RC) functions as a public platform for the presentation and dissemination of peer-reviewed artistic research outputs by individual researchers and research clusters, as well as self-published research outcomes. It also functions as a platform for (internal) documentation of research related developments and results by students, and the opportunity for assessment of such work by their institution.

RC enables students, artists, and researchers, by creating Expositions, to deviate from the standard format of academic presentations, journal articles and/or research repositories:

  • Because images and sounds are not subordinate to, but fundamentally on par with the text;
  • Because of the opportunity provided to break out of the linear narrative structure;
  • Because it provides each registered user with a personal media repository;
  • Because it facilitates the option for a continuous (and collaborative) research activity from notation/documenting research processes and initial outcomes to fully elaborated publications.

The RC offers an online platform in which sound, images, video, and text can be combined in an integrated format for presentation, and in which the visual disposition and the focus on different media formats can be decided by the creator at this stage, there are approximately 30.000 registered users and around 5.000 publicly available research outputs (expositions).

The Research Catalogue is provided by the Society for Artistic Research (SAR). Use of the RC is free of charge for all individual users, while institutional use is dependent on a portal partner membership with SAR.

In this on-site seminar, we will give you a hands-on introduction to the use of this platform and present the two main editors and the basic tools for creating expositions. You should bring your personal laptop. At the start of the seminar, we will offer to register each of you as individual users at the RC. For this you will need to bring a valid ID-card.
